What impresses newcomers to Hillside is the warmth and down-to-earth attitude of Pastor Jason Jakum and church members. People who haven’t attended church, or for some reason have quit going to church, are usually surprised at how meaningful these services can be. Services are meant to lift the name of the Lord Jesus Christ through contemporary worship, teach the Word of God by thought provoking sermons and share in fellowship with the wide variety of people who call Hillside their church home.
We have four separate children’s rooms. Nursery for infants to 2 year olds, Pre-K through kindergarten and first through third, and fourth through sixth graders attend Hillside Kids.
What We Believe
Hillside Community Church is a nondenominational Christian church that believes in the Gospel. We believe that Jesus Christ died on a cross to take upon the sin of humanity, and rose again three days later. Every person is loved by Jesus and can have a personal relationship with Him.
We believe the basis of Christianity is to be born again and to follow Jesus Christ. Our definition of born again is to recognize that we can’t save ourselves, but that God grants us new life and eternal life through His grace. God’s goodness and Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross has bridged the gap for us imperfect humans to have the chance to be gifted life after death. We no longer live in a seemingly dark and hopeless world, but in God’s handcrafted universe with the promise of heaven awaiting us.
In return, we worship and thank God for who He is and what He has done for us.
The History of Hillside
Hillside Community Church was founded in October of 1981 by two friends and ministers, Pastor Joseph Jakum and Reverend Patrick Mahoney. Pastor Joe and Rev. Pat believed that God wanted to do something unique in the city of Bristol, and they followed that call willingly. They planted New Covenant Church and met weekly in Jennings Elementary School. New Covenant Church grew and played a part in renewing the faith of many Christian families.
Over time, New Covenant Church became Hillside Community Church, went through location changes, and expanded. The vision of the church leaders shifted. Hillside would not just be another church in town — but Hillside would be a place for the community as a whole. It would be a place that marriages would be saved, addicts would be set free, the hungry would be fed, long lasting friendships would form, and we could show our community what the love of God truly looks like.
We hope that in your visit to Hillside Community Church you will find a place to grow in your relationship with God with a supportive and loving church family beside you. Our mission is to give glory to God and God to the community.
